Why Meta rejects your business verification (and how to fix it)

Meta rejects business verification with a generic message that explains nothing. In practice it is almost always one of five specific causes. Here is each one, and what to check before you apply again.

In short

Business verification is the check where Meta confirms your business is real and that you are allowed to represent it. You need it to run WhatsApp Business API at volume. When it gets rejected, Meta does not tell you why. You get a "we couldn't verify" and nothing else. Nine times out of ten the problem is that some piece of data does not match exactly between your documents and what you entered in Business Manager. Before you reapply, run through the five causes below.

Applying blindly five, eight, ten times is the worst thing you can do. Each rejection does not get you closer. It cools the account and burns your time. Verification is not a lottery. It is a data cross-check, and it fails for the same reasons every time.

Before you apply: the five-minute checklist

Put these four things side by side and compare them letter by letter. Most rejections get solved right here, before you touch the apply button.

These have to match exactly

  • The legal name in Business Manager, identical to your official business document (full registered name, no shortcuts).
  • The address you entered, identical to the one on your registry record or utility bill.
  • The website, on a real, live domain of your own (even a single page).
  • The contact email, ideally on your business domain, not a loose Gmail.

"Exactly" is literal. "Ltd" and "Limited" are not the same thing to Meta's system. One dot, one comma, or one extra word can be enough for a silent rejection.

1The most common

Your name or details don't match the documents

Meta cross-checks the legal name, address, website and email you entered against your documents and against public records. If something does not match, the application fails, often without telling you. It is not that your business looks shady. It is a data consistency problem.

How to fix it

Open your business document and copy the legal name exactly as it appears, entity type included. Paste it identical into Business Manager. Do the same with the address. If your utility bill says "St" don't write "Street". Match the format, not just the content.

2Ownership mismatch

The account is in one person's name and the business in another's

A classic case: you opened the Meta account, but the business is registered under a partner or a family member. You upload your personal ID and Meta says it can't verify, because the person on the account does not match the legal owner of the business.

How to fix it

Add the legal owner of the business as an admin on Business Manager, or use documents that back the person actually on the account. What Meta needs is a clear line between the person on the account and the business being verified.

3The auto-match fails

Meta finds your business but you pick the wrong option

When Meta finds a candidate for your business in its database, it offers it in a list. If the one it shows is incomplete or outdated and you select it anyway, verification stalls. And if your business is not in the list, forcing a close-enough match is worse.

How to fix it

If the match it shows is not exact, choose the "my business isn't listed" option and upload your own documents when prompted. It is counterintuitive, but it unblocks a lot of cases: you would rather have Meta validate your papers than accept someone else's badly entered record.

4No public footprint

Meta has nothing to cross-check your data against

If your business has no website, shows up in no public registry, and leaves no trace online, Meta has nothing to check your claims against. It is not that it doubts you. It just can't find independent evidence. This is the exact same problem that stops a prospect from finding you on Google.

How to fix it

Put a real website online, even a single landing page, with the legal name, the address and an email on the same domain. If your business is in a public registry (commercial, tax), make sure the details there match Business Manager. A tax document or a utility bill in the business name usually works as proof.

5Rejected with no reason

The generic "we couldn't verify" message

Sometimes you do everything right and still get the generic rejection, no detail. Before you reapply for the tenth time, stop. Reapplying without changing anything just confirms the previous rejection.

How to fix it

Change one specific thing each attempt and note down what you changed: a detail that did not match, a clearer document, the website you just published. If after two or three careful attempts you are still stuck, that is when you escalate to support, not before. You show up with a clean case instead of "it doesn't work".

⚠️ One thing that trips everyone up

Business verification is not the same as your WhatsApp display name or your phone number verification. They are three separate checks, at different moments. One being approved does not move the others forward. If your process is stuck, first work out which of the three is actually failing.

Frequently asked

How long does business verification take?

Meta says "two business days", but in practice it varies a lot and can take longer. If two weeks have passed with no answer and your data matches, escalating to support is reasonable.

Do I absolutely need a website?

It is not a formal requirement in every case, but it helps a lot. It gives Meta a public source to cross-check your data against. A simple landing page with name, address and a domain email is usually enough.

Can I run WhatsApp API without verifying the business?

You can start and test with low limits, but to run at real volume and unlock capacity, business verification is required. Better to sort it out early, not when you suddenly need it.

I got rejected five times. Is the account burned?

Not necessarily. Verification rejections don't block the account on their own. But stop reapplying blindly: check the five causes above, fix what doesn't match, and reapply once with everything lined up.
