In short
Coexistence is a Meta capability that lets one number be connected at the same time to the WhatsApp Business app (the one on your phone) and to the Cloud API. Before, you had to pick one: app or API. Migrating meant giving up the phone. With Coexistence, your team can keep replying from the phone the way they always have, while automation, templates, and multiple agents run on the API. On top of that, when you turn it on, Meta brings your recent chat history and your contacts into the API. It is not magic though: there are conditions and limits, and they are all below.
What Coexistence actually gives you
- You keep using the WhatsApp Business app on your phone with the same number.
- The same number runs on the Cloud API at the same time: automation, templates, campaigns, and multiple agents.
- When you enable it, Meta imports your recent history and contacts into the API. You don't start from zero.
- You don't lose the number, and you don't drop the conversations already in progress with your customers.
For years, connecting your number to the API carried a real emotional cost for small businesses: it meant giving up the phone app. The owner who replied from their own phone, the team used to WhatsApp Business, all of that went away the day you migrated. That is why a lot of people never took the step. Coexistence removes the trade-off. You no longer have to choose between "the convenience of the phone" and "the power of the API". You get both.
One number, two ways to work it, at the same time
Think of your WhatsApp number like a phone line. Before, that line could only be plugged into one device: either the phone with the app, or the platform with the API. Coexistence lets the same line be plugged into both at once. An incoming message can be seen by the app on the phone and by the platform on the API, depending on how you set it up.
The owner or an employee can keep replying from the app on their phone for the simple everyday stuff. And at the same time, the API auto-handles the repetitive questions, fires templates and campaigns, and spreads the important conversations across several agents on a proper work screen. Nobody has to abandon how they work overnight.
When you turn it on, your recent history travels to the API
This is the part that relieves people the most. The classic migration to the API left you with an empty inbox: you lost the context of every open conversation. With Coexistence, at the moment you connect, Meta brings your recent chats and your contact list into the API. Your agents don't start blind. They see the conversation that was already going.
A recent window of history and your contacts get imported, not your entire multi-year archive. It's enough to make the transition smooth and keep anyone from losing the thread of what they were talking about with each customer. From there on, everything new is logged in the platform.
Not every number gets into Coexistence today
Here's the part almost nobody tells you upfront. Coexistence is not a universal button available to everyone. Meta enables it through providers that meet a certain status inside its ecosystem, and not in every region or for every account type at the same time. If a provider promises you Coexistence with no strings attached, be skeptical.
The number has to be on the WhatsApp Business app (not personal WhatsApp) and meet the conditions Meta sets for your country. The honest way to find out is to have your provider verify your specific case, the number, country, account type, before promising you anything. That's exactly what we do before saying "yes, this works for you".
"Coexistence" is not the same as WhatsApp on two phones
A common mixup: people hear "the same number in two places" and confuse it with linking WhatsApp across several devices, or installing the app on two phones. It's not that. Coexistence is the app and the Cloud API living side by side, and those are two different technical worlds: one is the consumer app, the other is Meta's business infrastructure.
Multi-device spreads the same app across several gadgets. Coexistence connects your number to a full business system, automation, templates, campaigns, reporting, multiple agents, without switching off the app you already use. It's not "WhatsApp on two phones". It's "your number, now with business superpowers too".
⚠️ A detail that trips everyone up
Coexistence is not a toggle you flip on your own from your account, and it's not guaranteed in 100% of cases. It depends on the provider's status with Meta, on your country, and on your account type. If your number doesn't qualify today, the right path is often the normal API migration (which no longer forces you to lose the number), and then adding Coexistence once the conditions are met. The key thing: don't promise it or assume it before verifying the specific case.
Frequently asked questions
If I connect my number to the API, do I lose WhatsApp on my phone?
With Coexistence, no. That's the whole point: you keep using the WhatsApp Business app on your phone and the same number runs on the API at the same time. Without Coexistence, the classic migration does take the app away, which is why it's worth checking whether your case qualifies for Coexistence before deciding.
Does it import all my old conversations?
It imports a recent window of chats plus your contacts, not your entire multi-year archive. It's enough for your agents to see the context of what was in progress so nobody loses the thread with each customer.
Does it work for personal WhatsApp or only Business?
Coexistence works on the WhatsApp Business app, not personal WhatsApp. If your number is on the personal app today, the first step is moving it to Business.
Can any provider give me Coexistence?
No. Meta enables it based on the provider's status and on your country and account type. A serious provider verifies your specific case before promising anything. If someone guarantees it without looking at your number, take it with a grain of salt.
What if my number doesn't qualify for Coexistence today?
The alternative is the normal Cloud API migration, which no longer makes you lose the number. You give up using the phone app for that number, but you gain all the API capabilities. And if Coexistence gets enabled for your case later, you can look at adding it then.
